Member Spotlight - Dede P.

How long have you been a member of Fountain City (/BKS)? Joined either Oct. or Nov. 2019

What's your 30 second elevator pitch about yourself? (What do you do, tell us about your family/hobbies) I'm a bike ridin', crossfittin', gardenin', cussin' kind of lady that is a proud wife to a pretty kickass husband, a mother to two awesome kiddos, two mostly-awesome dogs, and one aloof cat, that earns a paycheck doing business taxes and LOVES a good party (especially if there is dancing involved).

What initially brought you into FCF? Showed up to cheer on Lucy Penrose during the 2019 Open

Tell us about you fitness/health background? (Did you play sports growing up? Try other gyms/work out at home?) I was a competitive gymnast for most of my younger years. I did play some soccer and softball "for fun" but ultimately left gymnastics for the HS cheerleading squad. Until CrossFit, I would just hit up the occasional trendy workout at the time, ya know, tae bo, hot yoga, Y membership with younger kids, train for a 1/2 marathon and then not workout for a year and half, etc...

What are some changes you've noticed in yourself during your time here at FCF? (Physically, mentally, capabilities, daily life, etc.) Most notable - M.U.S.C.L.E.S. For real! Seeing muscles become visible on your body is SO FUN! Women tend to focus too much on weight loss...for the record, my weight is pretty much the same it was the day I started doing CrossFit. BUT I've lost over 12.5+ inches, gained amazing functional strength, friendships, and a community that keep me showing up for even the hardest workouts.

What kinds of things can you do now, that you were not able to do when you first started CrossFit? (inside or outside of the gym) So many things. I was not able to do more than one strict push up (and that is questionable) and definitely could not do a pull up. I can now string about 10 of those together and it is AWESOME. I'm also more independent when it comes to the garden projects I dream up...last summer I moved over 1,000+ lbs of limestone rock all by myself - my husband was thrilled to not have to do it. Thank you, Deadlift.

What motivates you to keep coming back for more week after week? See previous answers...because who doesn't want muscles and the ability to not have to "ask for help". I also want to be able to "take the stairs" for as long as possible!

In your opinion, what is the most valuable aspect of Fountain City Fitness? Great coaching and a great community. The coaching is great when trying to reach goals and getting your form correct (which makes working out easier and more beneficial) and the community to cheer you along and sweat with you is a bonus!

What do you hope to accomplish in the future here at FCF? I'm going with Muscle Ups. Might take me 5 more years to get one...but I'm good with being able to do a Muscle Up at age 50.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone that is considering joining a CrossFit gym? Keep an open mind (I was convinced I would hate it) and find your people. They will for sure be the reason you ultimately keep showing up.

Dede... showing off that gymnastics past.

It’s time to take action! Having goals or benchmarks you want to hit are important. It’s the end point on the map. Without it, we don’t have any direction. Goals should be specific (“I want to be able
