Member Spotlight - Kevin C.




How long have you been a member of Fountain City (/BKS)? I joined BKS in 2016 so now over 4 years


What's your 30 second elevator pitch about yourself? (What do you do, tell us about your family/hobbies) I am 31 years old, married to Liz with a 2 year old son, Luke, and a 2 month old daughter, Emmie. I have an Engineering Degree from KU and am the Support, Training, and Customer Success Lead at a Data Analytics and Asset Performance Management Software Company, Atonix Digital. Outside of working out, I also enjoy golf, watching football, and spending time with friends and family.


What initially brought you into FCF? I signed up through a Groupon with a friend and was looking to get rid of my shoulder pain when lifting


Tell us about you fitness/health background? (Did you play sports growing up? Try other gyms/work out at home?) Growing up I played Baseball, Basketball, and Soccer and in High School I ran Cross Country, Track, and played Tennis. Towards the end of High School I began lifting weights at Balley Total Fitness and lifted at 24 Hour Fitness in the years between college and joining BKS. I briefly tried a different CrossFit gym but did not have a great experience.

What are some changes you've noticed in yourself during your time here at FCF? (Physically, mentally, capabilities, daily life, etc.) Since joining, I have continued to get stronger and increase work capacity with a huge improvement in mobility and which has helped eliminate my joint pain, especially in my shoulders. CrossFit also keeps me mentally tough and shows me that I can accomplish difficult tasks.


What kinds of things can you do now, that you were not able to do when you first started CrossFit? (inside or outside of the gym) Before CrossFit, I did not have any experience with Olympic Lifting or Gymnastics. Since joining I have learned how to do Handstand Push-ups, Bar Muscle Ups, Ring Muscle Ups, and Handstand Walks. I have also learned how to Clean a barbell and have Snatched my body weight.

What motivates you to keep coming back for more week after week? I enjoy the variety of the workouts and the community of hardworking people, especially the 6:30 crew!


In your opinion, what is the most valuable aspect of Fountain City Fitness? The community of supportive and hardworking yet compassionate people that both workout and coach at Fountain City Fitness - all backgrounds and experience levels are equally loved.

What do you hope to accomplish in the future here at FCF? I want to continue to get stronger and fitter as I get older and I hope to be as active as Stu when I grow up.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone that is considering joining a CrossFit gym? Do not focus on the daily score but rather focus on learning to do the movements correctly and your long term progress towards getting stronger and fitter.
