Member Spotlight - Stu W.

How long have you been a member of Fountain City (/BKS)? 8 years (February 2013?)

What's your 30 second elevator pitch about yourself? (What do you do, tell us about your family/hobbies) I’ve been practicing law in KC for 36 years focusing on civil and criminal litigation. I have been married to Kyra for 35 years and we have two daughters who both went to UT and live in Austin TX, one is an elementary school teacher and the other works for Google. My wife and I enjoy traveling with friends, eating out and entertaining for friends at home. I love CrossFit and the community we have at FCF.

What initially brought you into FCF? Needed to lose some weight (wound up losing 30lbs) and improve my conditioning.

Tell us about you fitness/health background? (Did you play sports growing up? Try other gyms/work out at home?) Just played tennis, have belonged to a few tennis clubs but Never belonged to a gym.

What are some changes you've noticed in yourself during your time here at FCF? (Physically, mentally, capabilities, daily life, etc.) I find that I have a ton more confidence that I can complete any task I undertake which comes from completing all those tough workouts. Success definitely breeds success.

What kinds of things can you do now, that you were not able to do when you first started CrossFit? (inside or outside of the gym) Just about everything fitness-related. I still remember seeing Mike Watson and Travis Vanderberg doing things I thought I’d never be able to do. Now I’m doing them. That gives you the confidence to try things that you thought were not possible.

What motivates you to keep coming back for more week after week? My fitness, which is now one of my most prized possessions. Friends that I have bonded with over shared misery. And the endorphins.

In your opinion, what is the most valuable aspect of Fountain City Fitness? The people. Great group of nice people.

What do you hope to accomplish in the future here at FCF? Maintaining my fitness level into my 70’s.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone that is considering joining a CrossFit gym? Do it now. Don’t put off improving your fitness for one more day! Do something good for your body and it will reward you many times over.

Stu... taking on life from any angle.

It’s time to take action! Having goals or benchmarks you want to hit are important. It’s the end point on the map. Without it, we don’t have any direction. Goals should be specific (“I want to be able
