I don’t know about you, but the “back to school” shift hits me like a freight train every year. One minute it’s summer and we’re eating dinner at 8 PM, the next minute I’m packing lunches, tracking homework, and wondering if Cross Country starts this week or next...no, wait, that's a meet day.

This year, I promised myself it wouldn’t feel so chaotic — and I’m actually sticking to it. We're making a few small changes that are making a huge difference in how our family functions.

Here are 10 of them:

  1. Bedtime and wake-up are the same every day — start this BEFORE school starts.
  2. 2 go-to meals that I rotate when I’m too busy to think. I cook these on Sunday because inevitably one of the weeknights we'll get home at 7:30 with no food and no plan.
  3. Big glass of water first thing in the morning — bonus if I remember a pinch of sea salt.
  4. Protein first in every lunch so we’re not crashing mid-afternoon. The boy is big of turkey and cheese wraps.
  5. No phones 30 min before bed (this one’s hard but worth it). Mine lives in the living room overnight.
  6. 15 minutes of movement every day — dog walks count!
  7. A veggie with every meal — even if it’s just a handful of baby carrots. Having a few options helps.
  8. Sunday reset — plan, prep, breathe.
  9. Mental fitness for the whole family — a quick “win of the day” at dinner. We play Rose, Bud, Thorn.
  10. Say no to one thing — the world won’t end if I skip a committee meeting.

None of these are life-changing on their own. But together? They’re helping me feel less scattered, more energetic, and way more in control.
