Eight years ago, George joined our gym looking for a simple way to move more. As a busy 34-year-old at the time working in ministry, his days were often consumed with taking care of others. Exercise was a way to reconnect with himself. He found success with coaching and CrossFit early on — not just physically, but in how it helped him feel energized, strong, and grounded.
But like many people, life got in the way.
A demanding schedule and long work hours pulled George away from the gym for nearly three years. During that time, movement disappeared from his daily routine. He felt sluggish, unmotivated, and not like himself. About that same time a routine blood test revealed high blood pressure. Despite being strongly against taking pills, he was prescribed medication. That moment stuck with him — not just as a medical issue, but as a deeper sign that something needed to change. Finally the New Year's Resolution that actually stuck, he knew he needed more movement in his life.
That’s when George came back. Now at 42!
Rejoining was easy, he said, because he knew this place. He trusted the coaches. He trusted Travis, the owner. And most importantly — he trusted the process.
“I didn’t want to try anything else,” George said. “I knew what worked before, and I wanted to get moving again right away.”
Now, just a few months back into consistent training, the difference is dramatic. George trains with us twice a week in class and has even started working out on his own at home — something that never happened during his time away. His energy is back. His mindset is sharper. And, perhaps best of all, he’s officially off blood pressure medication.
George’s goals are growing, too. He’s aiming to work up to 4–5 classes per week — not out of pressure, but because he wants to. He says the coaching team is one of his favorite parts of being here: fun, welcoming, but also serious about form and injury prevention.
“At 42, injury is a concern,” he says. “But here, I’m met where I’m at. They make sure I’m moving well, but still push me and hold me accountable.”
As a Hispanic man, George knows he faces higher health risks like diabetes and high blood pressure — conditions that affect many in his family. But rather than accept that as fate, he’s choosing a different path. He’s learning, adjusting, and creating a sustainable approach to wellness. Even his nutrition is evolving — thanks to a vegan roommate, George now incorporates more plant-based proteins and experiments with new recipes that fuel his lifestyle.
What makes George special isn’t just his comeback — it’s his curiosity. He asks questions. He applies what he learns. He’s not just checking a box at the gym. He’s building a better life.
His story isn’t over. And that’s what we love most about it.
